Case Study: Restoring an Oriel Window in Raynes Park

The Problem

In Raynes Park, a beautiful oriel window had begun to fail. Years ago, pebbledash was applied over the original finish and brought flush with the sill. This trapped rainwater against the timber, causing the wood to rot and the fixings to corrode. Over time, the window became weak and unsafe.

Our Approach

We carefully removed all the rotten timber and corroded fixings, replacing them with pressure-treated wood cut to the right size. To protect against future moisture, we added building paper and fixed a mesh to form the correct shape for rendering.
We then applied a three-stage render system:

  • Pricking coat to fill hollows
  • Scratch coat to build shape
  • Dashing coat to blend with the existing finish

To give the window lasting strength, we included waterproofer, fibreglass fibres and lime in the mixes, and we kept the drip bead under the sill clear so water could flow away properly.

The Result

The oriel window is now structurally sound again, with the render restored and the proper weathering details in place. Rainwater is directed away from the sill, protecting the home from future damage while keeping its character intact.
